When Movement Meets Meaning at Stage the Change

On November 14, Arts Ignite proudly returned to the Stage the Change Conference at Long Island University for our second consecutive year, joining ten arts organizations in delivering creative, youth-centered workshops for local high school students.
Led by Dance Teaching Artist Morgan, the Arts Ignite team energized participants with two interactive workshops that connected movement, emotion, and mental well-being. From the moment students entered the room, the energy was there. They arrived ready to move, collaborate, and tell their stories through movement.
Before stepping into choreography, Senior Program Manager Marie opened the session with a research-backed presentation on how movement supports emotional regulation, self-expression, and mental wellness. The message resonated with the students; they immediately began offering reflections and participating actively in a discussion, which grounded the physical work that followed.

Turning Emotion into Movement
Morgan led participants through a dynamic warm-up that energized the participants– and even connected the teachers with their inner dancer. Morgan then taught the participants what she calls her “dance vocabulary” — eight movements that she correlates with specific emotions, such as confusion, release, and enlightenment. Their focus and eagerness to try was striking. Within minutes, students were moving confidently alongside Morgan, memorizing steps quickly and dancing together in sync.
After developing their “vocabulary”, students gathered in small groups to create original choreography to tell a story of a time when they were struck by a deep emotion. Some students began working with classmates they knew–and others collaborated with peers they had just met that day. Despite different levels of experience, the studio quickly became a space rooted in trust, curiosity, and creative risk-taking. Dance served as a powerful connector, linking body to mind and student to student.
A Space for Confidence, Care, and Creative Courage
As groups shared their work, the atmosphere remained warm, affirming, and supportive. When asked if they wanted to share their pieces, students stepped forward without hesitation, proud to perform and eager to encourage one another. Feedback was thoughtful and generous, reflecting a shared sense of respect and care.
The experience offered a clear reminder of what happens when young people are given space to express themselves freely and without judgment.

Student Reflections
“Dance is my therapy too.”
“You looked very confident doing it.”
“I love how fluid you were with your movements.”
“It is so much easier to move my body than speak something.”
“I like how at the end you guys were able to dance and overcome your struggles.”
Returning to Stage the Change for a second year reaffirmed Arts Ignite’s belief that creative spaces build confidence, connection, and well-being. We are grateful to continue partnering with Stage the Change to bring movement-based storytelling and arts-centered learning to young people across New York.
