Happy World Theater Day!

Happy World Theater Day from Arts Ignite! Going back to our founding in 2006, theater programming has always been at the heart of our work. Whether it’s in NYC or in Johannesburg, South Africa, we love bringing theater programming to communities that need it. As we celebrate this special day, join us on a tour around the world of Arts Ignite’s incredible theater programs:

Newcomer Youth Theater Experience

First up, we’re bringing you to NYC for the Newcomer Youth Theater Experience (NYTE). Launched in 2024, this innovative program empowers newcomer students in NYC public schools to build confidence, self expression, and English language skills through theater. See our students in action and learn more by clicking here or the link below!

Rising Stars Arts Camp

Next up, Richmond, Virginia! Since 2022, our Rising Stars camp has ignited creativity and confidence for students at Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts (PHSSA). Before Arts Ignite arrived at PHSSA, the school had no performing arts programming, and we’ve been so inspired to see the students’ excitement and passion for the arts grow year after year! Check out some highlights here!

artsINSIDEOUT

We hope you aren’t afraid of flying, since next up we’re taking a trip all the way to Johannesburg, South Africa for artsINSIDEOUT. For 15 years, this program has brought a unique arts experience to Nkosi’s Haven, a residence for children and mothers impacted by HIV/AIDS or gender-based violence. Last year we spoke to Amahle, a long-time participant, about her story. Check it out here!

Creative Borders

Finally, we’re taking a short trip across the border from Johannesburg, South Africa, to Gaborone, Botswana for Creative Borders. In partnership with the Maru-a-Pula school, this program engages an international team of Teaching Artists to help students develop creativity and self-expression through the arts, and cultivates a new generation of amazing Teaching Artists in the region. See the incredible highlights from the most recent session here!

This World Theater Day, all of us feel honored to make such an amazing impact around the world. We express gratitude to all of our Teaching Artists, partners, and supporters who make our work possible. The programs above represent just a fraction of our global impact, which you can see fully in the map below. Stay tuned for more inspiring stories to come!
